Start with the rules that can disqualify you
Read eligibility before reading promotional language. Funding amount, prestige and benefits matter only after you know that you are allowed to apply. Look first for nationality, residence, age, education level, years of experience, professional registration, language, location and deadline rules.
Create two columns: mandatory and preferred. A mandatory condition normally uses language such as must, required, eligible applicants are, only, minimum or applicants need. Preferred conditions usually use language such as desirable, advantage, preferred or encouraged. Do not treat the two groups as equal.
Practical checklist
- Nationality or residency restriction
- Education level and field of study
- Minimum work or research experience
- Language or test-score requirement
- Age or career-stage limit
- Country/location requirement
- Application deadline and time zone
Check whether your evidence matches the requirement
Eligibility is not only about believing that you qualify; it is about being able to prove it. If a programme requires two years of experience, identify the dates and documents that demonstrate those two years. If it requires a degree in a related field, confirm how your transcript or certificate describes the qualification.
Where the wording is ambiguous, do not invent an interpretation that favours you. Use the official FAQ, programme contact, employer vacancy notice or admissions office to resolve the ambiguity before investing hours in the application.
Use a go / verify / stop decision
After reviewing the criteria, place the opportunity into one of three groups. Go means every mandatory condition is satisfied and documented. Verify means one or more conditions are unclear and need confirmation. Stop means at least one mandatory rule clearly excludes you.
This simple decision system protects your time. It also helps you build a more realistic opportunity pipeline because strong applications receive attention instead of being crowded out by impossible ones.
