How to Build an Academic CV for Scholarships and Fellowships

Academic CVs are usually stronger when sections are factual and easy to scan. Use consistent dates, institution names and role titles. Put the most relevant sections earlier instead of following a rigid template that hides your strongest evidence.

A postgraduate scholarship applicant may lead with education and research; an early-career fellowship applicant may lead with professional experience, projects or publications. The ordering should reflect what the opportunity is evaluating.

Avoid bullets that merely repeat a job description. State what you were responsible for and what you produced, improved, analysed, taught, built, coordinated or delivered. Add scale when it is meaningful: class size, dataset size, number of participants, publication status or project duration.

Do not manufacture metrics where none exist. Precision is valuable, but credibility is more important than forcing every bullet into a numerical formula.

Dates and titles on the CV should agree with the application form, personal statement and recommendation context. Small inconsistencies can create unnecessary doubt and often come from maintaining several versions of a CV without a master record.

Save a dated master CV and create opportunity-specific copies from it. This preserves your full history while allowing each application version to emphasize the evidence most relevant to that opportunity.
