The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Health Technician located in the Department of Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System. Responsible for specimen procurement and processing section of the Primary Care Clinics. Must possess a Nevada Driver's license, American Health Association Basic Life Support certificate. Coordinates the activities of a team of health technicians to meet technical requirement of specimen collections and processing.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/16/2026. This position has an Individual Occupation Requirement (IOR).

You must meet the following: Possess technician experience that requires application of knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. (This position is part of the series that ranges widely in type and includes support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.) You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled such as providing skilled phlebotomy, quality assurance compliant specimen processing and testing functions, clinical patient support and general administrative support for all patient related activities in the satellite CBOC labs.

Performs skilled venipuncture in accordance with facility and laboratory policies and procedures. Perform a wide variety of blood collection in a responsible nature requiring enhanced knowledge of clinical science to understand the multiplicity of tests and specimen requirements, the mechanics of venipuncture and patient preparation. Phlebotomy collection will be from a variety of outpatient veterans and employees.

The employee will be expected to demonstrate versatility of skill in rapidly proceeding from one patient to another to perform multiple and simultaneous collections using accurate patient and specimen identification procedures.

Leading clerical/ administrative and trade skilled employees; Providing technical assistance with specialized computer systems, programs and/or software applications; Providing training for staff on specialized computer systems/software, and security issues; Collect and analyze data to prepare reports; Phlebotomy, specimen collection, infection control; Use, maintenance, and disinfection of lab equipment.

Applicants should possess effective communications skills and show duties performed support medical and/or health personnel. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (or 18 semester hours) with a major that included courses directly related to the work of this position (i.e. Laboratory Science).

Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation, OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond 1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.

OR, Have a combination of specialized experience and education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements.

Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-6 level. Then determine the applicant's education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-6. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-06.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Preferred Experience: 3 years of Hospital Phlebotomy experience and 1 year of Lead or Supervisory experience Full performance of this position is GS-7 Physical Requirements: The position primarily involves work performed in both sitting and standing positions, standing and bending for a prolonged period, walking and lifting to twenty pounds, kneeling, and some stair climbing is required. The work requires manual dexterity, a large degree of concentration, and working at top speed for several hours at a time.

The ability to distinguish colors and color intensity is required.
